HIGHLIGHTING, DRAWING, AND NOTES, OH MY!

Newsflash! Your mind doesn’t like to work, it likes to have fun. Mature readers know how to create an environment that matches their learning style. Everyone’s brain is hardwired to learn differently. You may want to skip to HOW ARE YOU SMART to discover how your mind likes to learn. This information will help you choose which strategies match your interest.

You may not be able to control what you read, but you can control how you read. All sensory information flows first into the thalamus. From here the information is sorted and sent to both the amygdala and the frontal cortex. The pathway from the thalamus to the amygdala is shorter and faster than the pathway from the thalamus to the frontal cortex. As a result, your mind responds first to emotional information than rational thought.

By accommodating your environment to match your learning style, the amygdala senses happy emotions and sends out messages that say, “This is fun, keep reading, keep reading!”Since emotions drive memory, you can strengthen your mind’s ability to transfer new information from working memory into long-term memory by choosing note-taking tools that match your learning style. Your ability to create meaning is directly related to your ability to choose the tools which help your mind process information. When you understand how your brain works, you can change your reading behaviors, retain more information, and improve your learning.

It’s time to use those tools you’ve been avoiding. If you are a kinesthetic learner, make sure you take notes, create movements, and highlight while you read. If you are a visual learner, make sure you draw pictures, use different color highlighters, and create collages for abstract concepts. If you are an auditory learner, make sure you talk back to the author by writing your thoughts in the margins and share your ideas with a friend. Explore your thinking and notice which tools help you remember the information.

Learning becomes exciting when you create an environment that matches the way your mind prefers to read. Remember, when your mind has fun, the reading gets done!

  2. I never knew that when you control your enviorment and the things around you, your brain uses happy sensors and it helps you read and memorize things better than anyother time. I think i will need to start putting more control in my enviorment so i can help me read.

  3. When I start to read something I automatically think that its going to be boring. I need to stop having a negative outlook on reading, and tell myself reading can and will be fun. If I can do this, my brain will keep the information stored longer.

  6. I basically do the same thing Logan does. In addition, I take notes on a seperate sheet of paper so I don't have to dig back through the book to study. This helps me for tests so I don't waste time on any useless information! I can use this also to make reading more fun!

  7. It's best to highlight and take notes while you are reading the material. It is harder to go back once finished. This is a way to pick out key information and words. In a way, this technique helps the brain store the important information.

  8. I am more of a kinesthetic learner so I guess that I have to take notes, highlight, and create movements. I already do normally take notes while I read. I will have to start trying the highlighting, and creating movements now.

  9. Boy oh Boy, is the study of the brain a mind boggling quest! It's so fascinating how the images we see immediately go through the parts of the brain and instantly our mind makes sense and filters through things. For me, I'm a visual learner and discovering new pictures or scenes really jogs my memory. I love highlighting and using bold colors, I try to make a connection with the things I learn!

  12. For me highlighting and takeing notes is my best bet to understand what I am reading. But if I do not chose what I am reading I automatically think I am about to be bored to death and I Know that is not positive at all.

  13. When I used to highlight information, it would always be the things that I never needed to have highlighted. But now when I use flirt it helps me highlight and take notes on the most important things that really matter.

  14. Well I'm a kinesthetic learner but when reading i don't like to highlight my book. I don't know why but it just bugs me out. So when reading i realize i'm going to put postit notes on my key area's and put the first few words of the important parts to help me.

  15. I myself work and learn in many ways, somethings i need to see and some i need to do. The enviroment has a huge part in it.

  16. Yeah, maybe if I try some of these things something will work. Im usually more of a visual learner, but reading does not always give you that option so you have to take notes and stuff.

  17. I've never really like writing im my books. That never was exceptable, but know it doesn't really matter if I do or not. I think it's time to resort to other ways of understanding things because I just want to become better at it.

  20. It's true, if your environment makes it more fun for you to read you will have a better understanding of it. You just need to keep your brain interested in whatever you are doing and you will be able to process more.

  24. Highlighting is a very useful tool because it keeps me from reading the whole chapter over and over again. I also take notes while reading to help me remember the key points.

  33. It makes sense that if you make your enviroment quiet and controlable you could learn better. It is one thing that I dont do though. Which I need to do now.

  34. I can't concentrate or study without almost total quietness. I do like to make notes on what I read during my reading so that I can easily go back and study the main points of the reading later.
