MIND TEMPER TANTRUMS

Is your purpose for reading: TO GET ‘ER DONE? Do you count how many pages are left, grumble that you’re bored, or think reading is pointless? The problem may be your lack of purpose, not your mind. When you look at reading as a task to cross off the “To Do List” instead of an opportunity to learn, you are creating a prime environment for a mind temper tantrum.

Your mind is not a responsible adult, it’s more like a two year old child; naturally curious and always asking, “Why?” If you begin to read without setting a purpose, the child inside your mind throws a temper tantrum. It goes something like this; “Why do I have to read? I don’t want to read! I want to text my friends, surf the Internet, and watch TV. I don’t care about reading. I never remember the information anyway. THIS IS WASTING MY TIME! AAAHHHHH!”

The best way to avoid a temper tantrum is to be proactive by deciding why you are reading. Your purpose will change depending on whether you are reading: for entertainment, to learn, or to evaluate.

If you are reading for entertainment, you are reading for fun. Since the reading material matches your interests, it’s easy to read. As a result, your mind is able to multi-task (do two things at once) such as; listen to music or watch TV, without effecting comprehension. Entertainment sources include; text messages, magazines, and novels.

If you are reading to learn, you are reading to be informed. Since the reading material is new, it’s harder to read. As a result, you will have to read slower and stop more often. Informational sources include; textbooks, professional journals, technical manuals and reference materials.

If you are reading to evaluate, you must read with a critical eye. Not everything written down is true. Pay attention to the author’s word choice. If the author makes a statement about a belief that should be held, a judgment that should be shared, or an action that should be taken, the author is trying to influence your feelings, thoughts and behavior. Persuasive sources include; editorials, movie/book reviews, advertisements, and letters to the editor.

Finally, remember to always respect your inner child. The instant you feel a temper tantrum begin, give your mind a time out. Walk away from the text and allow your mind time to process the new information.

When you communicate a clear, specific purpose for reading, your mind pays attention to the text. Set a purpose and lose the temper tantrum. It’s that simple.

  1. I never truly did have a purpose to read except to get it out of the way. Still my mind didn't have a temper tantrum because of it.

  3. Yeah when ever i read something i dont want to, or i have to read for a project my mind just flips out. Like it just wants to go crazy. But i got to understand, that when that starts to happen, i need to take a break and relax.

  4. Now I understand why some reading is so boring to me. I feel like I do not have a purpose to read sometimes. I guess I indeed do have mind temper tantrums, but I do give my mind a break from what I am reading often. Therefore, the tantrums aren't too severe. I guess I need to be more proactive with my studies. I'll take this into consideration whenever I read next!

  5. I never used to set a purpose while I read. That is something that I'm going to have to start doing. Hopefully I will tell a difference.

  6. That always happens to me, if I'm not interested in what I'm reading I cant consentrate as well as if I'm reading what I want to read. I need to try and set a purpose next time.

  8. I admit i count the pages when i am reading for homework, because some of the boring stuff that i have to read feels like it takes forever. But i never looked at it like my mind just needs a timeout, this is an interesting way to put it and i am excited to try it and see how my mind reacts.

  12. I agree there are times when I am reading something and I just flip-out. When this happens I have to stop what I am reading and do something else. Its best to stop before the tempers flare.

  16. The only time i have a tantrum is after i have been reading something very boring for over an hour. I have no trouble sitting down and reading for fun but at the sight of textbooks, its not pretty.

  17. I don't think my mind really ever had a temper tantrum when I had to read, but I never liked when I had to read for an assignment or for homework. I really only read to make my teachers happy.

  18. I like how your brain is like a two year old child. Once you feel your brain about to throw a temper tantrum, Give yourself time to relax and take in that new information. Very interesting.

  20. I feel like when I read I mostly have a purpose, but that purpose is to get the reading out of the way. If I made reading more fun and more personal I believe the information would stick better in my mind.

  27. I always skim, because when I start to go off into my own little world I come back a second later and realize I wasn't paying attention to what I just read so I go back to that while I move on to the next part at the same time.

  29. This beginning paragraph said it all about my reading habits. Endless nights of reading books assigned by my english teacher and all i can do is count the pages left. Then id read those as quick as possible and get none of the information off of them.

  30. If I am not interested in the topic being discussed in the book I find it rather hard to concentrate. I am going to try to set a purpose next time to help me improve.

  31. After readin GET R DONE, i got hooked into readin the reast just to see what it was talking about. Thats what i try to do in books. Pick out one specific thing that draws my attention and that gives me motivation to read the rest.

  32. Get R Done was a common phrase I would use when I had to read a book that was not in my interest. I'd sit there counting the pages and then lose focus. Little did I know this was because I did not have a set purpose for reading. There can be such a difference reading with a set purpose because you can actually train your mind to listen and focus on the things you learn about. With this new knowledge I might establish a purpose for successful reading.
